Tønder is Denmark’s oldest trading town with an official town charter, and has a population of 7,000. Many houses in Tønder date back to the period 1600 - 1800, and bestow the town with a cosy atmosphere. With the many large and small specialist shops, grocer’s shops, furniture stores offering a world class range of products, cosy cafés and good restaurants, and many events, Tønder has a lot to offer. In the old water tower, erected in 1902, there is an exhibition of the chair production of internationally renowned furniture designer Hans J. Wegner. A total of around 40 chair designs are exhibited over 8 stories. The brilliant museum complex also includes the South Jutland Museum and the South Jutland Museum of Art. The farmer’s market is held on Tuesday and Friday mornings.
